UPPSALA, Sweden - (March 4, 2002) - MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that MySQL has been selected as the embedded database for popular software products from Virage, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRGE), Blue World Communications, Inc., CoreSense, Inc. and SS8, Inc. These companies reflect a trend toward the increasing use of MySQL as the built-in database for commercial products that require a high-performance, reliable and resource-efficient data management system.
"While MySQL continues to be a mainstay of Web development efforts and other mission-critical projects within companies, we've seen tremendous and growing interest in using it as the database within commercial products," said Marten Mickos, MySQL AB's CEO. "Most of these customers value MySQL for its unique combination of speed and resource efficiency - features that can be critical to the success of a product."
The MySQL database server embodies a unique software architecture that maximizes speed and power. Extensive re-use of pieces of code within the software and a streamlined, but functionally-rich, feature set have resulted in a database management system unmatched in speed, reliability, power and ease of deployment.
Virage Embeds MySQL in New Rich-Media Learning Solution
Virage, a leading provider of video and other rich media communication software, has embedded the MySQL database in its VS Learning product, the company's new solution for the learning/training market.
"MySQL has proven to be powerful and reliable," said Stanford Au, Virage's vice president of engineering. "We value MySQL's dependability for managing courseware in our new VS Learning product for the learning space."
Blue World Communications Integrates MySQL into Web Development Engine
Blue World Communications, a company renowned for its easy-to-use and powerful software for building data-driven Web sites, has integrated the MySQL database server into its new Lasso Professional 5 product, a powerful Web application server designed for high-end Web developers. The MySQL database bundled with Lasso Professional 5 is called Lasso MySQL, and it will provide Lasso developers with a powerful SQL database server.
"Lasso customers have asked for tighter integration between Lasso and high-performance SQL databases," said Bill Doerrfeld, CEO of Blue World. "We chose the open source MySQL database primarily because of its great reputation, high-performance and ease-of-use - features that are hallmarks of the Lasso product line."
Lasso Professional 5 will offer support for the Red Hat Linux, Mac OS X and Windows 2000 operating systems. It is available in Beta version currently, and the production version will be available in March 2002.
MySQL Database at the Core of E-commerce Software by CoreSense
CoreSense chose MySQL as the workhorse back-end database for the company's fully integrated e-commerce software for small- to mid-size companies. By relying on the MySQL database and other open source software, CoreSense is able to provide Fortune 500-level e-commerce functionality and performance for a fraction of the cost.
"We have been able to target the mid-market with a highly sophisticated offering in large part because we've used open source software like MySQL," said Jason Jacobs, CoreSense CEO. "With MySQL, we've never had to compromise on functionality or performance, and we've virtually eliminated the pass-through costs associated with proprietary databases."
CoreSense software gives small- and mid-size businesses all the tools they need to manage multi-channel sales in an increasingly complex global market, including an online storefront and transaction processing, to order fulfillment and supply chain management. The MySQL database manages the full gamut of business process management for CoreSense.
MySQL Handles Heavy Load for SS8 Networks
SS8 Networks, an IP signaling and services provider, recently introduced the industry's first fully IP-based local number portability (LNP) product, enabling phone carriers to satisfy government regulations without the need for expensive and proprietary circuit-switched technology. A critical piece of the SS8 LNP solution is its database, which must manage all the names of people -- up to 50 million records -- who have switched carriers, with corresponding tracking information. SS8 Networks selected MySQL as the database of choice to play this important role.
"After looking at several open source and proprietary databases, we concluded that MySQL very well fits our needs: a database engine that is not resource hungry, is fast, reliable, and has a very good price/performance ratio," said Zoran Milojevic, the LNP lead architect at SS8.
MySQL AB Offers Commercial Licenses
From its inception, MySQL AB has passionately supported and promoted the open source philosophy that people should be able to freely read, redistribute, and modify the source code to promote rapid improvement and evolution of the software. While the MySQL database server is available at no cost to everyone under the standard open-source GNU General Public License (GPL), MySQL AB also offers non-GPL commercial licenses to organizations that want to develop and re-sell a commercial product containing MySQL code.
A non-GPL commercial license allows a user to resell a product that contains MySQL code without GPLing the entire application, and it does not violate GPL rules or intentions. This duel licensing structure allows MySQL AB to promote open source ideology and, at the same time, establish a business model that supports it.
In addition to packaged software suppliers, MySQL AB is targeting mobile applications, telecom equipment, testing equipment, consumer electronics, automotive applications and others for non-GPL commercial licensing of its database.
